What Happened To The Bullpen Car?

The only bullpen car you can get today is some kid’s toy.
Today, ESPN Page 2 writer Paul Lukas reviews the history of the bullpen car, nice stuff but he doesn’t explain why the bullpen car went away. What happened to the bullpen car? Certainly somebody on the Electronic Information Superhighway has researched this. Maybe over at Bring Back the Bullpen Car they have some theories.

Is it too expensive? Look at the payrolls of the 2007 major league baseball teams. I find it hard to believe that the cost of buying, operating and maintaining a bullpen car would make much of a dent in these teams’ bottom line.

My theory is that some crazy environmental watchdog group lobbied to somebody (to who, though, Congress? the commish? the President?), because driving the 500 feet from the bullpen to the mound sets a bad example about wasting gas. Hey, is sending a message to millions of American consumers worth taking away of the immeasurable joy derived from the bullpen car? I say no. Give the relief pitcher a luxurious, chauffeured drive to the mound. Calm him down a little bit. Make him feel good about himself and bring back the joy.

Enjoy the weekend Legend faithful. Go Tribe.

About the Author: I am a Cleveland sports and Buffalo Sabres fanatic. I'm currently living in Erie, but even when I'm not there, Erie runs deep in me. I'm an ex multi-sport goalie, and we goalies tend to see things a bit differently. I went to college with Cecilio's Scribe and I am also a Big Red afficiando. Otherwise my college sports loyalties are all over the place. I try to keep my posts light, but I'm a Cleveland fan so the occassional rant is possible (inevitable?).
