Rant From The Barstool, Part II
By Erie's Scribe on Nov 16, 2007 with Comments 4

Big Country loves this picture and so do I. Nothing to do with the rant.
Let us move on now to the NBA. I don’t have much to say about Stern at present. He has tasked himself with the thankless job of cleaning up basketball’s hip-hop image, for which he is partially to blame, and it just doesn’t seem fair for me to slight the man who is actually changing course and doing something, instead of continuing to mismanage a product to validate his own ego with an inflated sense of accomplishment. However, some of the fines are a little ridiculous and some tolerance around the grey areas could go along way in repairing Basketball’s slightly tarnished image as a fun and friendly league (along with players not going into the stands). Also, waiting till just before the start of the new season to make a public policy announcement about allowing NBA referees to gamble during the offseason might not have been an example of “best judgement,” especially coming the year after the Tim Donaghy scandal.
Now I don’t care to make any comments about the NFL, there was a time perhaps when I might offer a few comments or some private observation; but, not anymore. Now a days, when someone asks me what I think of The Leauge, I repeat to them the party’s slogan, “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery and Ignorance is Strength.” Okay, seriously, it is too early to say what kind of commissioner Roger Goodell will make, but, I can tell you its time for the heavy handed policies of the NFL to change. In that light I would like to focus on a few things in the game that need to be un-done. First off, no more TV timeouts in the first quarter; Networks will still have plenty of time between change of possession in the rest of the game to push alcohol we are already consuming, and car insurance on us, just let us fans and our team get into the flow of the game first. Second, the illegal contact rule needs to be re-written so that it’s a five yard penalty and a repeat of the down. This see-sawing back and forth between seasons deciding whether or not they’re going to enforce the rule is nauseating and so is the prospect of a nudge seven yards down the field on a desperation fourth and 26 play keeping an opponents drive alive.
Even more disgusting is Goodell’s expansion into European markets. I’m anything from an isolationist, free trade is one of my most liberal qualities, but, American football belongs in America. If they (Europe), want their own football league they can have it; but, when I envision the day that the San Diego Charges might be asked to fly out from the west coast to play the Berlin Weinerschnitzels on Monday Night Football, and then have to come back home to play whomever next Sunday, I repent, but, only quietly; Big Brother is watching. There’s a lot more I’d like to say; I wouldn’t mind taking a couple of shots at the NCAA, but, time is short and space is limited.
This is Big Country,Go F*** yourself San Diego.

About the Author: I am a Cleveland sports and Buffalo Sabres fanatic. I'm currently living in Erie, but even when I'm not there, Erie runs deep in me. I'm an ex multi-sport goalie, and we goalies tend to see things a bit differently. I went to college with Cecilio's Scribe and I am also a Big Red afficiando. Otherwise my college sports loyalties are all over the place. I try to keep my posts light, but I'm a Cleveland fan so the occassional rant is possible (inevitable?).

Jim Tobleson would have been a far better guest blogger. Big Country was okay though I suppose?

It’s true, that Jim Tobleson is a Chatty Cathy
What a great picture, rather long caption though. Couldn’t bother reading all of it. Again, good choice with the pict.
