Forecasting the Super Bowl Hype Machine

Let the Fav-Ra Love Fest Begin
As usual, the two weeks between conference championship weekend and the Super Bowl will be interminable and filled with predictable stories, ripe with cliches told to us ad nauseam. So, we started thinking about the potential stories we have not to look forward to and the match-ups we’re hoping for. The bright side: no more chance of a Manning-Manning Super Bowl. I just threw up in a little bit in my mouth just thinking about it…
New England vs. Green Bay

Our Thoughts: Clearly, the game we would most like to see. Two high-powered offenses. Two superstar quarterbacks. The potential for a competitive shootout and a host of big name stars is pretty much all you can ask for come Super Bowl time (other than your team being in the big game).
- Wes Welker highlight reels galore
Our Thoughts: A huge step down in terms of interest level for us, but still more appealing than the other two options. Living in New York, it will also fuel non-stop debate about just how good this team is, which is sometimes fun.
The Hypefactor Downside: Not only do we have to hear about Philip Rivers ascension to “leadership” of this team, but can you imagine the Norv Turner hype??!!
Cue These Headlines:
“Turner Quiets Critics with Trip to Super Bowl”
“Turner Puts Legacy of Losing Behind Him”
“L.T. Says He Would Gladly Give Up MVP Trophies for Super Bowl Ring”
“Favre Sees a Little of His Gunslinger Mentality in Rivers”
“Steroid-User Merriman Heads to Phoenix and Nobody Seems to Care” (sorry, we took some editorial license on that one)
Break Out the B-Roll:
- Clips of Tomlinson and Rivers going down against Indy, Volek Winning Drive
- Rivers shouting at fans, opposing players, refs and whomever else will listen (think words like “feisty” “competitive” and “exuberant” mixed with “annoying” “obnoxious” and “classless”…spurring debate)
Our Thoughts: By far, the game we’d be looking forward to the least. While we acknowledge the potential competitiveness, the two weeks prior to gameday would make us physically sick because…
The Hypefactor Downside: 2004. Draft.
Cue These Headlines:
“Years Removed from Draft Swap, Rivers and Manning’s Careers Collide Again”
“Draft-Day Moves Look Good in Retrospect for Both Giants and Chargers”
“Rivers and Manning Look to Carry Mantle for Younger Generation of NFL QBs”
Break Out the B-Roll:
- Why even bother with anything else…just play the draft day footage over and over again…announcements of selections with Tagliabue…close-ups of Eli and Archie…jerseys on…jerseys off…can’t…take…thinking…about it…
Signing off. Throw us some more predicted hype in the comments.

Wait– so any matchup involving the Chargers is boring? That’s just not fair to a team who has fought hard to be where they are. Give them credit– especially if they can pull of the incredible feat of beating the Patriots. I think if they can do that, they deserve more credit than you’re giving them, whether you like their attitude or not.
Several other Packer-Patriot storylines:
-Super Bowl XXXI rematch
-Randy Moss Bowl (remember all the offseason rumors of Green Bay going after him)
-The obvious “Pursuit of Perfection” story that will drive us all crazy by the time the game actually gets here.
If you’re going to do a merriman bashing on steroids, do one on rodney harrison using HGH too.
Stop with the double standards.
I can’t believe I wasted two minutes of my life reads this S@*#…
LT is starting to wear on “us”? Whos “us”?? Do you have the voice of America? You speak for all of us?
yeah, it’s so boring when teams other than new england make it. Is it possible to have the the Packers and Giants tie and we can just watch the patriots scrimmage themselves in arizona? Cheaters.
Fix your error on the week 17 game in Foxboro. Your memory is lacking because the game was played at Giants Stadium.
Also, if GB and SD meet, it would be a matchup of head coaches who were offensive coordinator of the 49ers after each other, and just in the past couple of years. *sigh*
Fuck you biased ass holes…why is everyone against SD fuck the media good will triumph over evil…
What is it with you ESPN writers and your inability to give the Chargers any respect at all? Why are they all of a sudden the most hated sports team among you guys? All you did last year was praise them during their 14-2 run, and then bashed them for losing to the Patriots. Then this season, when they actually had to fight back from a 1-3 start, beat the Colts in their house and make it to the AFC championship game, you still refuse to give them one iota of credit. LT wearing on us? Last year, you guys only praised him and called one of the best players in the NFL. Now he is wearing on you? You know what is starting to wear on us? Hearing about the Patriots. Believe it or not, there are sports fans outside of Boston. And believe it or not, they want to hear about stuff other than how great Tom Brady and the Patriots are.
Holy crap, Chargers fans unite! Such anger from a fan base who has a team is going to the AFC Championship game.
Relax, 28 other teams are sitting at home.
How did this piece of crap get published? Boring writer who writes like he speaks for everyone else.
A Superbowl with the Patriots in it would be the game to least look forward to. Everyone would expect a blowout.
thanks for tapping into the fact that LT and the Chargers are classless. Nobody seems to see that because LT’s such a great player. he plays up that aw shucks image so much, but he (and rivers even more) is a loudmouth.
but a chargers/giants matchup that focused on the 2004 draft actually would be a great storyline. i’m hoping for the other two teams, but that is a great story if it did happen.
thanks for the comments, all. the whole Rivers thing is an interesting debate. thought this article was interesting. radio this a.m. talked about the issues related to fans molding impressions based on seeing guys only for 3 hrs on a Sunday

I would agree that the Patriots/Packers SB would be the most interesting, but the other combinations would be good too. Obviously, if its a blowout, its going to be boring no matter who plays. I too am surprised by all the Bolt bashing recently eventhough I’m a NE fan. I’m hoping for 2 very exciting and interesting games this week-end. Go Patriots!
huauhahuahuahuahuhaua dude, these comments are hillarious. funny post, man, but I do agree you don’t give the Chargers much love… ah who cares, I hate the Chargers! Go PATS!
I think the double standards in the Media for the Chargers vs every other team are ridiculous. Yes, Philip Rivers has a lot of passion and drive for this game and gets heated and talks some smack on the field. How can the media persecute him while they praise Tom Brady (who was caught getting in the face and mouthing off to the Steelers) and Brett Frave (who is constantly high fiving the Refs and is also known to talk a little). Then on the flip side of this, you have Eli Manning who up until recently, when he started playing better, was being crucified by the media for not having enough passion or emotion. I don’t understand how you can villanize Philip Rivers. He has never been in a physical altercation with woman (ie allegedly Pacman Jones and Randy Moss), had a DUI (numerous NFL players), he isn’t doing drugs (numerous NFL players), he isn’t abusing animals (Micheal Vick), or been involved in any shootings (again numerous NFL players). He is a family man who is married to his Middle School Sweet Heart, has four children, and is a great person. If the worst thing you can dig up on Philip Rivers is that he talks maybe a little bit too much on the field, then who cares. Let him talk, it’s not hurting anyone, its not making the world a worse place to live in. If you want to criticize him, criticize him for his play which is hard to do since he has a better first two year starting record than any current NFL Quarter Back’s first two year starting record including Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Can the media give us some un-biased, even keeled NFL news stories?
are you kidding me?????? why are the chargers not getting any respect??????? BECAUSE THEY HAVEN’T WON SHIT, and when they lose, they cry!!!!!! the patriots had to win 2 super bowls to get any kind of respect, in fact, after winning 3 super bowls and going undefeated, NOW they are getting the respect they deserve
I didn’t realize this blog was going to be serious. I read because I thought it would be funny. Meh.
I don’t see anything wrong with Rivers talking smack. Put yourself in that kind of competitive environment as a very young man on a big stage and see how you react. Everyone does it, including the Pats. Did you see how Brady “celebrated” after coming back against the Colts? He gave a congratulatory headbutt to everyone in the huddle. After the Pats came back and beat the chargers last postseason? They all did a dance at midfield. Every team does this.
It’s just weird how the team that gets caught cheating is the more likeable one. Let’s be fair… what the Pats got caught doing is something probably every team at least tries to do. Why don’t we just hype this game for what it is? The seemingly unstoppable, undefeated Patriots vs. the spunky, underdog Chargers. That’s it. If anything, it’s like Golden State playing the Mavericks in the playoffs last year.
Hahahaha! At the top of the page, it says this:
“A sports blog for those who remember the days when it was OK to throw inside, hit the quarterback and trash talk a bit.”
Yet he hates on Rivers and LT trash talking. Take a position, man!
This blog is garbage.
I think by far the most intriguing storyline to a GB-NE Superbowl would be the Randy Moss aquisition by NE. Favre only wanted to come back this year if the packers were willing to get him some offensive weapons. Randy Moss has proven to be one of if not THE biggest weapons in the NFL. Brett Favre was truly upset that the pack didn’t land randy and I think the biggest headlines would read “Would the patriots be undefeated right now if it weren’t for randy moss?, Would tom brady or brett favre be MVP if moss went to the pack?, Would the packers possibly be favored in the Superbowl?” I think that if randy moss were a packer, brady wouldn’t have broken the TD record and brady would have had a much more mediocre year. I mean, I know he threw to everyone, especially welker, but without that randy moss threat, would welker really have had that good of a season?
I’m rooting for GB-NE Superbowl as a grudge match from the last time they met in the Superbowl. Maybe the pack can ruin the pats perfect season bid, even without randy moss. GO PACK GO!!!
Waaah! Waaah! This blog sucks. Waah! LT Rules!
- Gotta Love Chargers Fans!
Chargers fans are whining? This whole this is about how great a GB/NE Matchup would be and how all the chargers do is whine
I believe the classiest team in the NFL is the chargers, and im a RAIDERS fan
Rivers gets fired up. Yeah, @ that Denver game? that was mouthing off. Him telling the crowd @ Indy “i’ll be back”…how is that mouthing off?
Brett Favre whined that he wouldnt come back if he didnt get good recivers, and he wouldnt help train a new QB if they drafted one
The Patriots were caught cheating, Bellicheck goes straight for the media cameras after every game, and Tom Brady dumped his PREGNANT girlfriend to go marry a supermodel. The chargers have the most players involved with their community- LT with numerous foundations such as make a wish. Shawn Merriman with his Construction Co. to help pay for and rebuild houses damaged by the fire. Lorenzo neal with Habitat for humanity- How can you talk about them this way?
All you pats fans- You’re the biggest Aholes out here. You talk about how ANY team you play isnt classy and talks too much…and you are just “trying to play an innocent game”
shut the hell up and let this crap be decided on the playing field
I love being the underdog! I see a little bit of Rivers in every CHARGER fan. We don’t need the media. We are who we are; no one can change us. Say what you say I will always be a CHARGER fan. Why do you guys hate us? Cuz we talk too much? Last time I heard that was part of being competitive. You are a dirty liar if you say you never trash talked to your buddies while competing. What happened to bashing the real assholes like haynesworth, moss, and vick! We are who we are… I guess you guys are too- Idiots!
they are who we thought they were!
Is anyone going to stand up and give the New York Football Giants the credit they deserve….We’d win 6-7 games?!?!, Proving people wrong is obviously is what we do best Eli Manning is here to stay see you at Big One New England
Does ANYBODY really want to see the Pats in the Supre Bowl AGAIN???
I mean, think about it, it’s like the 4th installment of a movie (Rocky IV, Rambo IV, Halloween IV). Been there, done that. It’s boring. Let’s see something new!!!
And, by the way, for those of you bashing Rivers for his mouth, let’s not forget the the Saintly Tom Brady was the guy who caused the taunting rule to be implemented.
Im really getting sick of the patriots getting all the attention. Does nobody remember how close they’ve come to loosing their last six games? Yeah its history and i can respect that, but give me a break. im sick of hearing how amazing they are.
are you kidding me?????? why are the chargers not getting any respect??????? BECAUSE THEY HAVEN’T WON SHIT, and when they lose, they cry!!!!!!
First of all Cutla, your reasoning is completely idiotic. So you are saying that if a team doesn’t win a Super Bowl, they should not get any respect at all? So by your logic, Marino’s Dolphins, Fouts’ Chargers (who had legends like Joiner and Winslow) and the Bills who made it to 4 Super Bowls but lost deserve no respect at all? That is completely moronic. And you of course as a Pats fan give the Chargers shit for being upset after losing in the 06 season. Dude, are you serious? You’re telling me that if the Pats had an incredible record, got beaten in their house, and then the other team started disrespecting them, their house, and their fans that they would just take it in stride? Bullshit! They had every right to be upset! Any team and any fans would be upset! And wait, what? We haven’t won shit? We only went 14-2 last season and were AFC West Champs, and went 11-5 this year and were repeat AFC West Champs…how is that not winning anything? You talk a big game cuz it’s so easy to jump on the Pats’ bandwagon, but the fact is that before Brady came along, your team was a joke.
you obviously hav no idea what football really is and its obvious your a faget
My Superbowl prediction… Chargers and the Giants… screw what all the media says. And as for the Patriot fans, it’s your team and you have the right to support them and say what you will. I know almost everyone will say I’m crazy so my prediction and some may even call me retarded, but hey… I told people that the Bolts would beat the colts (even predicted the interception before the half that would have made it 14 – 10 had it not been for that holding call) Also said Giants would beat the Cowboys the week before they played…
Will Randy Moss MOON the Packers? Hmm…?
Wait wait wait. SO a SB with the most talented dynamic athletic physical colorful team in the league the Chargers would be boring?? LOL, do you guys wright for Marstimes? Get real for 1 hour next time when writing your next blog.
Wait so the most talented, exuberent, colorful, athletic, physical exciting team in the league the Chargers would be boring? Who is Vincent Jackson? He is the new Larry Fitzgerald. So you smug little jokers need to stop and think in the future when bloggin out. Don’t insult us in the future.
I’m just thinking of the ESPN front page should the Patriots lose – ESPECIALLY if it’s to the Giants. Tom Brady’s head down, the giant oversized picture, and:
18-1
In big white text. Over on the right and below you’ll have lots of stories of the Giants blah blah blah, with one “Manning does in Brady again, this time Eli”, or something to that effect.
Of course, this would’ve been perfect after a loss to the Jags – “16-1″ would’ve summed up everything you ever needed there.
Do you actually wright for a living? Somebody is getting ripped off.
Go SD!!!
no, we don’t. you clearly do, though. I guess write is a pretty hard word to spell.
Love those SD fans!
I’m a Packers fan, so, of course, I want THEM to get to the big dance. But I’m more interested in seeing the Chargers in the Super Bowl than the Patriots. There’s a certain “been there, done that” feeling to the Pack/Pats scenario. Different teams, I know, but I’d like to see a new Packers Super Bowl matchup. So, go SD!
Looks like Rivers and the Chargers do suck.
