Why Does Penn State Suck At Basketball?

Where have you gone, Joe Crispin? Joltin’ Joe has gone away.

At tourney time, I’m not usually lucky enough to have my alma mater around to cheer for. So, I’m constantly on the lookout for teams to throw my support behind. For geographical and family connection reasons, Pitt, Syracuse, Maryland, and Stanford (I will NOT be cheering for the Cardinal this year) are the usual suspects I get behind. I’ll even cheer for Texas from time to time since my buddy is a Longhorns hoops diehard. But I need another squad, Maryland and the ‘Cuse didn’t even make it this year.

Where you at Penn State? I need you! I’m a PA guy, you are our biggest school. Where the crap are you? Yeah, we know you’re a football school. Love Beaver Stadium, Joe-Pa, and everything that goes with it. But, you’re an institution with over 42,000 students, a 1.4 billion dollar endowment, and the $55 million dollar(construction cost), 15,000 capacity Bryce Jordan Center built to prop up the hoops program. So WTF?

Penn State basketball’s Wikipedia page is ominously blank, just like their NCAA tournament resume. The Nittany Lions have only gone to the Big Dance three times in the past forty years. Hey, any good Pennsylvanian will never forget the Crispin brother led 2001 run to the Sweet 16. Remember how fun that was? Can we get some good times rolling again?

Since that glorious tourney run, Penn State has not finished a season above .500. In fact, the Nittany Lions have posted a 34.3% winning percentage since then. Are you telling me that out of the 42,000 kids in school at Penn State, you can’t find 7 who are decent at basketball? Can’t you throw some money at one of the up and coming Mid-Major coaches? Can’t you do something?

By the way, at post time Georgia has a 25-21 lead over Xavier…….
WTJ’s shorts are probably wet at this point.

About the Author: I am a Cleveland sports and Buffalo Sabres fanatic. I'm currently living in Erie, but even when I'm not there, Erie runs deep in me. I'm an ex multi-sport goalie, and we goalies tend to see things a bit differently. I went to college with Cecilio's Scribe and I am also a Big Red afficiando. Otherwise my college sports loyalties are all over the place. I try to keep my posts light, but I'm a Cleveland fan so the occassional rant is possible (inevitable?).
