Really? You’re Not Already Retired, Oscar?

Our favorite fish-netted boxer is taking his “I-swear-it’s-totally-final-no-really-for-sure” step into the ring on December 6th. Or so it is reported via the network.

A few things mildly bothersome for me around this news. First, that ESPN deems there is a sufficient number of people in this sports-watching nation of ours who give enough of a flying you-know-what to select this as a lead story on their home page.

Just as depressing? They are potentially right in said assumption. If comments are any indication of popularity, people shockingly still give a sh*t about boxing. For instance, at least 574 of them (at last count) took the time to converse about Oscar and Manny Pacquiao (but, of course!) going head-to-head.

Which all gets me to a somewhat-connected point. Didn’t Oscar de la Hoya retire like like eight years ago? If he didn’t, shouldn’t he have? What is it with these athletes that just never seem to go away? We’ve chatted about this topic in various ways before, so this is nothing new. Plus, we’re sick of doing lists at this point despite the general public’s seemingly insatiable appetite for them.

That’s really all we got. De la Hoya probably needed to hang it up a few years back. Same with Warren Sapp. Ditto on Greg Maddux. Sure, none of them are/were terrible in recent years, but there just seems a natural time, and they’ve all passed it.

So, no, we will not be tuning into the fight. Hopefully, this will be his final fight. Besides, it looks like Oscar has plenty to do in his spare time.
