Current #1, Donnie Avery. Wait, what?

Let me start by saying I’m not picking on the Rams. And, yes, I realize with players getting released, free agency, trades and the draft, that rosters today are far from what they’ll be the opening weekend of the NFL 2009 season. That said, we couldn’t help but do a double-take when checking out the Rams receiving corps sans the recently-released Torry Holt.

The move was neither unexpected nor illogical. In fact, it makes perfect sense. This a Rams team looking to get younger and clear some cap space in the process. Getting rid of Holt does just that. The scarier part is what’s left behind. Will it stay this way for long? Surely not (at least we would hope), but it demanded a huh? moment from this avid NFL fan the first time we came across it.

Our immediate reaction? Major League. Who the f are these f-in guys? So, without further adieu…your St. Louis Rams receivers.

Donnie Avery: First off, I don’t like any NFL receiver rocking a number that sits beween 1-20. Call it a personal thing. There aren’t any great pro receivers rocking low numbers (if there are, they’re not coming to mind and hit me with some in the comments*). In short, Donnie Avery wears #17. You don’t want your number one receiver sporting #17. You just don’t.

The best thing I can say about Avery is that I’ve heard of him. The second round pick out of Houston had a solid rookie campaign catching 54 balls for three touchdowns, only narrowly behind Holt for the team lead. With Holt gone, is Avery a number one? Not so much, but his credentials are HOF-worthy compared to the rest of the Rams wideouts…

Keenan Burton: Burton also fits into the Rams youth movement. Also drafted in ’08 and out of Kentucky, he racked up 12 catches in his rookie campaign. Burton also sports jersey #14. From further research, this is a theme in the ‘Lou.

Derek Stanley: If you’re starting to say “who?” we’re right there with you. Stanley was taken in the 7th round in 2007 and worked his way from the practice squad onto the Rams ’08 roster, making six grabs and getting in the endzone once. Oh, he wears #19 by the way.

Joel Filani: Filani has no career stats and was drafted in the sixth round by Tennesee in ’07.

Ummm…we’re kind of speechless. Wow. Surely there must be other teams sporting similar scenarios at the WR position. Just give us a minute to think about…well…actually…still thinking…

*UPDATE: Good call by commenter on the whole low-number receiver thing. I forgot about this guy named Fitzgerald who wears #11. He’s OK.
