Loyal Reds Fans Stick with Team, All the Way Through Game #1

Packin’ Em In!

Capacity at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, OH is 42,059. Attendance for Wednesday night’s tilt against the Mets? 13,568. Go ahead, we’ll give you another second to digest that one. Seriously? I had originally intended to post this last night. Pictures like the one captured above had captivated me and left me bewildered as to how the park could look so empty during only game two of the 2009 season. Surely my eyes must have been playing tricks on me. Perhaps the outfield stands were the only ones left uncovered and alone. The rest of the place must’ve been packed.
After checking the official attendance via this morning’s final box score, it looks like optical illusions can be ruled out. 13 thousand? Can someone explain this? Sure, the Reds have been mediocre at best for quite some time. But, it’s the beginning of the season! Hope springs eternal! Hell, the NYT is picking Kansas City to bring home a division crown. Cincy has Votto and Bruce, Volquez, young talent and at least reasonable expectations…what gives?
Following this train of thought, I immediately came to another perfectly logical conclusion that explained everything. The economy must be wreaking its havoc on Major League Baseball. I bet if I looked at some of the other poor to quite poor teams around the League with moderately new stadiums but very little recent history of winning, the numbers would almost certainly be similar. Right? Let’s see here…
40,764 in San Francisco.
31,700 at Petco. But it’s always really nice weather there, so you can’t really count that…let’s see, how about…
30,047 in Houston.
22,829 in Texas.
22,856 in Baltimore.
22,270 in Minnesota.
OK, forget it. There are no excuses. Reds fans, we sympathize with your plight. You’ve got the Reds, the Bungles and not even a crappy NBA team to deflect your attentions. But, seriously, try being fans for at least a few days. 54 degrees ain’t that cold. Grab a beer and a coney and pretend. Embarrassing…your only saving grace? Toronto. 12,145. Those canucks sure do love their baseball.

    Dude, it’s the Reds.

Maybe Mets fans should travel better. Have you seen Great American Ballpark when the Cubs are in town? It’s Wrigleyville South.

  2. Ryan says:

The Reds were even selling beer. It was banned in Toronto for a few games.

Today’s easter attendance was 12,897 and fans were continually moving closer and closer to the field to stay in the sun. It’s weak, $5 dollar tickets and you can sit wherever you like as long as you ignore the ushers. Wont get any better if this team continues to hit into triple plays like today and only score 2 runs in the first inning, but im diehard baseball so ive still got 20 tickets on my cheap season ticket package plus weekend and day games for 5 bucks
