Circle Rules Football? Whiffle Hurling? Vikingball? WTF?

Robert Stolanik for the New York Times

It is often said we mock what we don’t understand. I’ll admit it, I don’t get it. Perhaps my simpleton mind has been too warped by those so mainstream games of pick-up hoops or chucking a baseball around in Central Park. In fact, it’s quite obvious I lack the sophistication to truly appreciate the apparently burgeoning trend of unusual new artistic participation “sports” that includes the likes of vikingball and straightjacket softball, not to mention circle rules football. Still no idea what we’re talking about? Check out this story from this weekend’s edition of the New York Times.

Once you’re done, if you could just explain it to us. Not that we don’t buy that dribbling, kicking, scrumming a huge pilates ball towards a small goal isn’t tons of fun. Maybe I need to experience it, before questioning. In the meantime, the Mets just tied the Giants up in San Fran so any deeper foray into whiffle hurling will just have to wait.
