Gillispie Probably Should’ve Looked into a Formal Contract, Now Maybe SOL

…and then abruptly ends

Not for nothing, but I didn’t have a very good feeling about this one a good ways back. The good ole Kentucky faithful don’t take well to getting whooped by Gardner Webb at Rupp Arena. Gillispie managed a 40-27 record over two years in Lexington capped by a quarterfinal exit to Notre Dame in this past year’s NIT. Such does not cut it in Wildcat Country.

So, let bygones be bygones right? Umm, not so much. Billy boy is now suing UK for being “fired without cause” and is seeking somewhere in the neighborhood of $6M, in line with the $1.5M/year he says he’s owed over the remaining four years of his contract. There may be only one problem…that whole contract thing. Like, there isn’t one.

Now, I’m no law professor, but it seems like when one agrees to a multi-year premiere coaching job for many millions of dollars a written formal contract of some sort would be a pretty standard issue requirement? Perhaps I’m just naive. According to early reports, Gillispie and UK had only a signed “memorandum of agreement” with no formal contract on the books. Maybe he can also produce an email or maybe a bar napkin with the contract stipulations scribbled on it.

Curious to see how this one turns out. The lesson? When taking a job for many millions (or any job for that matter), always look into a binding legal document of some sort. Just a tip, for what it’s worth. By the way Billy, not sure if the Wildcats would agree with the no just cause thing, cause in their eyes you sucked. Just saying…
