Philly Daily News Writer Pens Post About Blogs’ Irrelevance…on His Blog

“Ignore it, and it will go away.” Such is the advice of Philadelphia Daily News columnist David Murphy regarding the blogosphere as captured in a post from his “High Cheese” blog on Philly.com yesterday. Part of me wishes I could take the same guidance and apply it to the tightly-knit, seemingly hypnotized community of MSMers. You know, the not-so-secret society that continues to robotically preach the same stubbornly close-minded mantra against the evil world of the blogosphere.

It’s such a familiar and unoriginal script which it what makes it so laughable. I certainly understand their motivations, and I’m also not so thick-headed to not acknowledge the real issues for this channel (blogs) in terms of accountability and standards. It’s the attitude and tenor the “debate” has taken on that makes me incapable of summoning the energy to keep talking about it.

Continuing to lob cheap (and tired) insults back and forth only perpetuates the petulance (how’s that for some alliteration). There are pros and cons of every form of media – from the folks who spout off on sports talk radio to the showman on cable news to the daily newspaper columnists to, yes, blogs and online/new media. The media world has morphed into one big freakin’ mess of a melting pot, as I believe Gonzo correctly opined during yesterday’s OTL segment. Bottom line: Some people get it. Others didn’t at first, but are opening their minds to try to figure it out. Others don’t get it, don’t want to get it and, therefore, never will. As the Big Lead details, Murphy is clearly of the latter category.

There is so much within his column that warrants a record-length post here — at least six or seven points/quotes that scream off the page. Each deserves to be singled-out, dissected and thoroughly rebuked in a comprehensive manner with tons of empirical evidence. But, unfortunately, I do have another “professional” job. This is only a creative outlet — a hobby one might call it. Somewhere for me to share my uninformed, non-credentialed and completely-lacking-in-clubhouse-perspective musings during down time. Henceforth, my missives are pretty much irrelevant anyway.

Instead, I’ll just choose to ignore said writer and similar sentiments for the most part and hope they just go away.

You need to edit your blog. I'm pretty sure the guy in that Philly.com picture is Cotton (Jason Batemen) from ESPN's "The Ocho".
