An Ode to #4: Ten Songs to Get Over Those Retirement Blues

Don’t Worry Big Guy, These Songs Will Pick You Up!

While I promised never to talk about you-know-who here again, the gravitational force is simply…too…strong. Plus, I honestly sort of feel sorry for the guy. No really, I do. So, as a small token of my empathy, I’ve gone out of my way to select a few songs to make the ole’ gunslinger rekindle that fun-loving, indomitable spirit we all used to know and love. Consider it my little gift to you, Brett. Enjoy.

10. (Don’t Fear) The Reaper – Blue Oyster Cult
Kicking it off old school. This one always makes me want to just get out there and skip down the damn street. Doesn’t it just get you fired up to chuck the pigskin around in prep for the big return? Oh, wait…

9. Don’t Know What You Got (‘Til It’s Gone) – Cinderella
Ain’t that the truth, huh brother? Ain’t that the truth. Damn poetry.

8. It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday – Boyz II Men

“Now, I take with me the mem-O-reees!” It hurts so good.

7. When You’re Gone – Avril Lavigne
I’d never heard this song until today. No, seriously. I ain’t embarrassed to admit I’ve sung along to some “Complicated,” but not this upbeat jingle. The lyrics just seemed right, though.

6. Missing You – John Waite

Really. I ain’t missing you at all. You know, since you’ve been gone…away. This time. Again. Not at all.

5. All By Myself – Eric Carmen
Brett, when you’re living alone, without the game, will you think of all the friends you’ve known and find that when you dial the phone no one’s home. It all hits too close to home.

4. The End of the Road – Boyz II Men
Is it though? Is it really? You know, the end of the road? Either way, those boyz II men sure know how to break down a man.

3. Never Can Say Goodbye – The Jackson Five
It’s your theme song! And, now, you go conjuring up a music icon taken too soon. Way to screw things up again and cut open a fresh would. So. Selfish. Typical. Never can say goodbye, no-no-no, no-no-no, no-no-no.

2. Dust in the Wind – Kansas
You’re not my boy, Brett! – Sincerely, Blue Pulaski

1. Don’t You (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds
Sure, here’s your one request. Enjoy retirement. We’re all going to do our best to forget about you. AGAIN.
