Browns Round 1, me likey….I think

Awesome Beast-Man

The Browns got an awesome Beast-Man with pick 3, YES!

For far too long a time, NFL Draft night has been the best time to be a Browns fan. Hopes and visions of grandeur dominate my thoughts. After one particularly disappointing season in the not so distant past, Draft night was the first time I forgave the Browns and got over the turd of a season. When the Browns went and drafted Beast-Man Trent Richardson, it was Miller Time. When they drafted Brandon Weeden, I was a little surprised, but kind of giddy because although I haven’t given up on Colt, this Weeden fellow can chuck the rock! There is that whole, he’s 29 thing, but, um, okay, huge fudging risk reward pick. IF (a huge if) Weeden is starting material from day 1, then the Browns just pulled off a coup.

Considering the Browns tried unsuccessfully to trade up for RGIII and then trade to move up one spot to get Richardson, I’d say the Browns were in love with three players in the draft.  With whispers of teams trying to move up ahead of the Browns, they gave up a 4, 5, and a 7 to swap picks with the Vikings to grab Richardson. I’m fine with the trade, the Browns have plenty of mid and late (crappy) round draft picks to try and unearth a gem with. For all that ails the Browns, GM Tom Heckert’s drafting the past two seasons has been a bright spot and perhaps a reason for hope? We’re just dealing with the first round tonight, and Heckert grabbed badass corner back Joe Haden at 7 two years ago, traded out of the 6 pick last year (giving the Browns 2 first rounders this year) and traded back down in the first round to grab run stuffing DT who’s more athletic than you’d think, Phil Taylor. One great player and one real good one who should improve. He wasn’t too shabby drafting in his former gig at Philly either. If he and his scouts love Richardson and really like Weeden, that’s okay by me.

The one thing about picking Weeden, it looks unlikely that they will get both a starting WR and a starting right tackle this year. Oh, and the fact he’s fricking 29 Scares The Shit out of me. This is our concern Dude. If they manage a starting WR in Round 2 and a potential starting right tackle later on, it will be Miller Time all weekend. For now, I’ll be happy with a superstar running back and maybe a slightly older than normal rookie starting QB?

I appreciate the optimism. I too have been optimistic about our picks year after year but now I am a bit more guarded because I know the disappointment when they don’t pan out. I am pumped for Richardson but not sure about wheeden. Why when we draft qb is there usually a question mark that come with guy. Couch didn’t have a playbook at uk and had little rotation on his spiral. Colt seemed to be a winner but has a weak arm and there is a reason teams let him drop to until later in the draft. That goes for Brady Quinn as well. So I am just saying I am pumped for the season but the track record is always in the back of my mind. Nevertheless Go Browns!

I hear you, I should probably be more guarded too. Lucky there are 6 more rounds of this thing. I hope they get a WR and RT.

Weeden is Bernie Kosar with wheels.

And we all know that is good news! For our readers not “in the know,” saying a QB is Bernie Kosar with wheels is my generic way of getting excited about any and all of the Browns QB projects since Bernie, Bernie.

If he is even close to playing like Bernie then I will be estatic about him and our chances to contend.
