College football coming to…Bristol Motor Speedway?

College football at a 160,000 seat Nascar track? Um, fu#! yea, why not?
Rumor has it that the Tennessee Volunteers and Virginia Tech Hokies will meet at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016. The famed Tennessee oval is approximately halfway between the teams’ respective fan bases in Knoxville and Blacksburg. This is a game and venue that’s been talked about for a decade. Speaking of which, there was a game played their decades ago…by NFL players…although, it’s been largely forgotten.
No matter. It’s awesome. Kitschy. Ridiculous. Maybe impractical? Sure. Perhaps all of the above. It may even be a terrible viewing experience for fans at the stadium, although the sheer volume of people and the setting would have to overcome some of the inherent obstacles.
And c’mon, isn’t it about time. We’ve done the aircraft carrier thing. NASCAR is the next frontier. They are talking about potential crowds of up to 160,000. Phenomenal. It also gives the Vols time to climb their way back to respectability by the time they’re on this elevated national stage.
It’s all sorts of compelling to me. The set up of the field. Ticket sales. Broadcast. All of it. And, oh yes, the tailgating should be TREMENDOUS. It’s enough to make me at least start thinking about a potential one-year deviation from my annual SEC pilgrimage. Or maybe not…
Regardless, let’s fire up those engines for some pigskin. Or something.
