Florida International’s new beach court is brilliant marketing

Marketing is critical to sales. Maybe it’s just as important for college hoopswins?
If so, it could be a good explanation for Florida International University’s recent rise from anonymity. The Golden Panthers made it to the Sun Belt conference finals this year before falling to Western Kentucky. You probably didn’t know that. But, you’ve likely heard about FIU hoops in recent years.
First, they signed former NBA legend Isiah Thomas to be their head coach, a beacon for nothing else if not discussion. Next, it was Richard Pitino son of another coaching legend. The folks in University Park know what it means to make a publicity splash. And it sure seems like they’re embracing it. The latest? A beach-themed basketball court.
Yup. FIU is once again a hot topic in the news — or at least the sports blogosphere — on account of their, ummm, unique new court design. Complete with whimsical swaying palm trees, crashing surf and golden sand. Whether you think it’s the stupidest thing ever or an artistic gift from the heavens, it’s no doubt got people talking. It’s a similar route those crazy folks in Boise created with what is now affectionately known as the Smurf Turf.
Perhaps the Golden Panthers hardwood will become a point of pride and intimidation. For now, it’s certainly succeeding in getting them some pub. Keep with that formula, FIU. But what, no sun?
