Forget the Rockets, How ‘Bout Dem Sixers? Speaking of…Who the Hell are These Guys?

Louis Williams and Your Philadelphia 76ers!

Willie Green, Louis Williams and Reggie Evans each average more than twenty minutes per game. How ’bout at least ten minutes/game for Thaddeus Young, Rodney Carney and Jason Smith? At least their stars are huge names…Samuel Dalembert and Andre Iguodala. If you are like us, you may be feeling like the Cleveland natives checking their opening day roster at the beginning of the “Major League.” Who are these freakin’ guys?

At least that was the first thing that came to our mind. Why are we even discussing the Philadelphia 76ers? Well, because outside of McGrady and the Rockets the Sixers are the hottest thing going in the association. Yes, we may be a wee late on this NBA trend, but excuse us for not taking quick note that the Philadelphia 76ers have won 13 of their last 15 including eight straight at home. Last night, the Sixers beat up on the Bucks winning by 22 on the road. All with a cast of characters who, even to a big-time sports fan, are pretty unfamiliar.

We know…we know. This is the East. The East stinks. And most of the teams Philadelphia has been beating…well, they aren’t very good. But this run has included wins over Orlando, Dallas and at Phoenix. On Sunday, the aforementioned Thaddeus Young (who, by the way, is a rookie who spent a year at Georgia Tech before being snatched by Philly at #12 in the first round and is getting more and more praise with each passing day) went for 22 points and added four rebounds and three assists. Dalembert and Andre Miller were next on the scoring chart with 18 and 16 respectively.

So, what’s our point? With the roster they’ve got, the Sixers seem to be “punching above their weight.” When things like that happen, you’ve got to look to the coach. Probably too often the coach takes the heat for having a team of mediocre players. By the same token, those players may not get enough credit when they perform well (with the praise instead heading to the coach). But it’s awfully hard not to give a hat tip to Mo Cheeks. We agree that it’s also nice to see Sixers mgmt. taking note and giving Mr. Cheeks a contract extension.

Mo has his team playing to the best of their abilities…winning games against the lower-tier teams in the League…performing well at home…and even managing to beat a few decent teams away from Philly. That all may not seem like much. But when you’re a Knicks fan, with a roster so many pundits claim is “loaded with talent,” these are traits that would seem quite realistic to aspire to. But, alas, we must endure Zeke and the soap opera of a roster chock full of dogs and malcontents.

So, for this playoff season, we’re adopting the Sixers as our team. Here’s hoping they can win a game or two in a first-round series. They’ve earned it.

Thanks for the link, and your welcome on the bandwagon as a vicarious fan.

Boston tonight and Detroit on Wednesday, two huge tests for this team that may just give us a glimpse into a first round matchup.

You’re going to see Thad on Garnett for stretches tonight, should be some test.
