From "Zero" to "Hero": Well-Played, Matt Cassel
- Updated: July 14, 2009
They are just throwing out ridiculous contracts left and right this week, huh? First, Marcin Gortat and now Matty Cassel? When will the wonders cease?! Seriously, one could make a case that these two deals – worth nearly $100M combined – are two of the more startling in recent memory for very different reasons.
Not that I’m equating them in any way. Shoot me down should you differ, but I’ve got way fewer problems with Cassel who is going to endure 16 games worth of pummeling as a starting QB in the NFL. Gortat’s $34M to log 10 minutes/game to give Dwight Howard a blow? More of an issue.
But this isn’t about comparing uncomparable contracts. This is about the absolute coup that Matt Cassel has pulled off here. I’m not going to belittle my supremely sports-educated readers on the Matt Cassel Story they already know backwards and forwards. Still, you’ve got to give some props to a guy who never started a college game at QB and is now set to make $63 million over a six-year deal with $28M gah-ron-teeed. Suck on that clipboard, eh.
History will now be the judge as to whether this is looked back upon as a shrewd move by a franchise in desperate need of a steadying force that picked up a good young quarterback to lead their team for years. Or a desperate move by a team blinded by a one-hit wonder and doomed to be haunted by its leap of faith. I, for one, am very interested to see how Cassel fares during the 2009 campaign. Is he the next Steve Bono or the Brady story part deux? I don’t know, brain is fried. Talk amongst yourselves.
