Jordan Fragrance Takes Flight…and Other Athlete Eau De Toilettes

The Scent of Greatness?

Raise your game. Raise. Your. Game. The tagline beckons me with the silhouetted face of his Airness along with a shadowed likeness holding a basketball in an outstretched arm poised to jam one home. Raise your game. FLIGHT, a fragrance by Michael Jordan. This is what I find while skimming the pages of an in-flight magazine on a trip last week. Honestly? WTF?OK, as a marketing guy I have to get it, right? Celebrities. Endorsements. People DO care. But while I may have always wanted to jam like Michael Jordan, I can say with great certainty that I’ve never even entertained the desire to smell like Michael Jordan. In general, the whole athlete cologne thing doesn’t jive with me. If I think spraying myself with stuff is going to help with the ladies, don’t those same ladies prefer things from Calvin Klein, Polo and the like?

Does Derek Jeter’s Driven do it for you gals with its “oriental woody fragrance?.” Maybe Lamar and Khloe’s “Unbreakable” collaboration is more your speed? About the only one I can really “get” is Beckham’s. Instinct. Sensual and sexy. Just like the man. Oh, Posh Spice, I never thought you’d garner my interest after “Wannabe.” How wrong I was…and if being wrong is wrong, I don’t want to be right…or something.

Anyway, where was I? Yes, athlete colognes. Don’t get it (except maybe Beckham), probably never will. Besides, there’s only one notable figure whose taste in fragrances belies my trust. His name is Brian Fantana.

Happy Thanksgiving, all. Football punditry likely forthcoming.
