Mike Leach isn’t taking losing well

Not out to make friends

Washington State hasn’t been particularly good at football for about a decade. In fact, the last time the Cougars posted a winning record was in 2003 (that season was actually the third straight 10-win campaign for WSU). They would need to roll together the past five seasons’ worth of  results right now to accumulate 10 wins.

Mike Leach entered Cougartown this season. He’s not used to keeping his mouth shut. He is used to winning. Before taking a few years off, he had spent his entire college coaching career runnin’ and gunnin’ in Lubbock leading the Texas Tech Red Raiders. It’s worth reminding folks that Leach did not have a losing season in Lubbock. Not. One. Ten seasons. Ten straight winning records. At Texas Tech. He went 84-43 in the process.

Year one in Pullman has not gone well. Leach’s press conference following an embarrassing loss to Utah this past weekend sums it all up rather well. Regardless of what you think of Leach as a person, he appears to be able to

coach. And his approach, no matter how polarizing, is probably right for this team at this juncture – no matter how wrong it might feel from the outside.

He will continue to piss people off. Players will leave. There will be transfers. Coaches, media, parents and players will rally against him. In the end, those who want to win and be part of a changing culture and program will likely stick it out. Those folks will likely experience what it takes to win — as well as those victories.

In the meantime, expect a heavy dose of sarcasm from Leach for anyone who continues to push for a softer, gentler approach (check out the last five minutes of the clip below).
